Metabolic health: the quiet foundation of energy
How your body handles fuel affects energy, body composition and long-term risk. It often changes long before symptoms appear.

Metabolic health describes how well your body regulates energy — how it handles glucose and fats, stores and releases fuel, and maintains healthy blood pressure and body composition. It is closely linked to how energetic you feel and to long-term cardiovascular health, and sits at the centre of our Live Well pillar.
One of its challenges is that it can drift gradually. Weight may settle around the middle; blood markers may edge upward; energy may become less steady. Each change is small. Together, they deserve attention.
What can be measured
- Blood glucose regulation markers
- Lipid profile
- Blood pressure
- Waist measurement and body composition
- Patterns of energy, appetite and sleep
Metabolic health is less about a single number and more about a pattern seen across several.
What tends to help
The most reliable levers are familiar: regular movement, including resistance training to maintain muscle; a diet built mostly from minimally processed foods with adequate protein and fibre; sufficient sleep; managing alcohol; and reducing long periods of sitting. Personalisation matters — the right structure for a frequent traveller is different from the right structure for someone who works from home. Metabolic foundations form one strand of the Healthy Ageing & Longevity program.
Tools such as continuous glucose monitoring can be useful for some people when interpreted by a professional, but they support a plan rather than replace one.
